Coaches can take their team on excursions such as trips to a local theme park, outdoor adventure centres etc., but there are important conditions and protocols that must be followed to ensure the safety and welfare of the children, in line with the GAA’s Code of Behaviour (Underage – <18) and Child Safeguarding Guidelines.
Key Conditions and Guidelines:
- Parental Consent:
- Written consent must be obtained from each child’s parent or guardian in advance of the excursion.
- Parents should be informed of full details: location, time, transport arrangements, activities, supervision, and expected return time.
- Adequate Supervision:
- There must be sufficient adult supervision, ideally with a ratio of 1 adult to every 8 children or better, depending on the nature of the activity.
- Supervisors must be Garda vetted and have completed child safeguarding training.
- Designated Child Protection Officer (DLP):
- The club’s Children’s Officer and/or DLP should be informed of the excursion.
- Any concerns about child welfare must be communicated through proper channels.
- Risk Assessment:
- A basic risk assessment should be conducted to evaluate potential hazards and plan how to manage them.
- Emergency procedures and contact information must be prepared and shared with supervisors.
- Transport:
- If transport is involved, it must be safe, legal, and properly insured.
- Coaches and volunteers should not travel alone with children in cars.
- First Aid and Medical Needs:
- A first aid kit must be available, and someone trained in first aid should be present.
- Any relevant medical conditions or allergies must be known to supervisors.
- Club Approval:
- The excursion should be approved by the club committee in advance and ideally documented in meeting minutes.
These guidelines are designed to protect both the children and the adults involved. Properly organised, a fun excursion like a trip to a theme park can be a great team-building and social experience for young players.
